News from the Canyons

Mas Locos, aspiring locos and friends,

Did a fast-pack from Batopilas to Urique the other day. Upon arrival in Urique 9 1/2 hours later, landed at a local restaurant/hotel, asking ¨Hay un stablo para un caballo?¨--Is there a stable for a horse?.

Of course, they had a room for me.

Omar was there drinking a beer. This made my job a lot swifter and easier, as he told me immediately that he was going to fund the prize money again for the March race, asking me how much he payed last year. I answered that he had payed 15,000 pesos and he said that he would equal that again this year, and if he is elected presidente, will continue to be ¨Un Chingone patrocinador¨--a big-fucker sponsor for the next 3 year term of office. That is good!

Bueno, I responded. And the kids at the computer learning center tell me that they have not had internet access for 4 months because the municipal has not payed the bill. He said he would take care of that, and I know that he will. I mentioned that El Camino Real, the foot trail to Los Alisos was in a lot better condition than any of the other foot trails that have gone to hell due to lack of maintenance, thanks to the grant we received last year for Prospero and his crew to clean up the trail for our run. He said he would be sure that Prospero had a grant to do the same this year.

I told him that we wanted to get more of a turn-out from Urique area Tarahumara runners, and other raramuri as well, that Venado Fuerte was coming again and has added some big ultra wins to his resume. We would like another 7,000 pesos prize money, bringing the prize money pot to 22,000 pesos--over $2000, and we would supply the corn, at least 6 1/4 tons for the top 10, and an additional 500 pound to ANY Tarahumara runner who finishes after the top 10.

He liked that idea.

Prizes:
10th--1000 pesos--1000 pounds of corn
9th--1000 pesos--1000 pounds of corn
8th--1000 pesos--1000 pounds of corn
7th--1000 pesos--1000 pounds of corn
6th--1000 pesos--1000 pounds of corn
5th--1500 pesos--1500 pounds of corn
4th--2000 pesos--1500 pounds of corn
3rd--3000 pesos--1500 pounds of corn
2nd--4000 pesos--1500 pounds of corn
1st--7000 pesos--1500 pounds of corn

I celebrated this quick and easy win by fastpack and running 20 miles out of the Urique canyon to El Rancho Del Oso, on some awesome single-track, half-track and quarter-track trail!

Anybody wants to come down for a little Caballo training camp--Bienvenido!
